A deep, velvet night unmarred by city lights pressed against the windows of the little cabin when I finally kissed my friend and lover into the exhausted oblivion of pleasure I had promised her. With gentle movements, I unwound her arms from around me and slipped out of the narrow bed weâd shared. Her essence hummed in my veins, sweet and hot as her mouth on mine, and my wings stirred and whispered, scraping the beams of the ceiling until I willed them back under my skin.
I pulled on my jeans and T-shirt, then donned my gloves. Danny lay in an untroubled sleep, her chest rising and falling in a slow, even rhythm, her lips curving upward in a smile. Confident I wouldnât need more insulation for a good long while with the warmth sheâd gifted me, I laid over her the flannel shirt sheâd brought me earlier, then covered her legs with her jacket. The air in the small room had heated somewhat with our exertions, and morning would come soon enough. Hopefully she wouldnât get too chilled before her body replenished her vital energy and she awoke.
By then, if I followed the plan weâd made together in the space between kisses, I would be long gone. She could turn on her phone without fear of leading anyone to me and call for help that way.
Would she call Berry to drive over the bridge and pick her up? What would she tell her fiancée?
She had made a big deal about staying honest with Berry earlier in the year, when they asked me to move out of the house they shared. Still, honesty about your friendâs secret demon side was one thing. Honesty about sharing earthshaking orgasms with said demon friend in the woods while on the run from federal agents was a whole other proposition.
I winced and paused, staring down at Dannyâs sleeping form. Had we made the right choices tonight? Almost certainly not. We had more likely blown up her life, as if the advanced state of combustion my own existence somehow sustained wasnât enough.
The ache in my chest didnât come from regret, at least not regret for the right reasons. I didnât want to leave her like this, even though Iâd promised, even though that was ostensibly the point of what weâd done.
That was part of the deal, unspoken but understood. What had happened between us in the woods would stay in the woods. I would go north, find Samaelâs contact. Failing that, the wild Pacific coast had plenty of remote wild places where I could hide until the trail went cold.
After that, I would have to keep moving. Demons like me didnât belong in the wilderness. We needed humans and the anonymity of cities, the bigger and busier the better.
As for Dannyâ¦well, she certainly loved me, but what Iâd told her still held true. Most humans couldnât help wanting a succubus, and she had something special with Berry, an ease and safety I couldnât offer her.
No, I couldnât take that from her, lure her further from her hard-won happiness.
